Celebrating Ten Years of Running: Courage

Last Saturday Tom and I went for a run around Jamaica Pond. It reminded me of our 2009 Boston Marathon training and a poem I was inspired to write:

Courage from "Feel the Heal: An Anthology of Poems to Heal Your Life""

The fear of ice and snow and slush embedded in my soul
a training run in winter - the path to Being whole.
A winter scene - Jamaica Pond - a feast for eyes' delight
to witness nature's splendor and behold this glorious sight.

A leaf - a tiny dancer - skating free without a sound
God's breath directs her movements as She guides her twirling 'round.
Families of ducks decide to walk or take a dip
a comedy of errors into icy water slip.

Branches now bejeweled though bare bend with loving Grace
sparkling diamonds' anchor water's surface hold in place.
God's hand a glove of glistening snow hugs rocks along the wall
their heads peek out reminding me I'm answering God's call.

A scene I'd never witness if I let my fear take hold
courage triumphed, steppin' out with footsteps sure and bold.
Knowing that the pain subsides and Spirit can prevail
the Marathon is beckoning - through those miles I shall sail.

When I was given the diagnosis of Post-Polio Syndrome and told many many frightening things:
If you use it you will lose it
Prepare to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair
Think about adapting your house or getting a ranch
You're going to have to quit your job if you have any hope of keeping the symptoms where they are
We recommend a sleep apnea machine
You need to drink liquids through a straw and eat semi solid foods and hope that you don't need a feeding tube in the future given your risk for aspiration pneumonia
You need to at the very least get back into a leg brace and use a cane
You have to conserve your energy
You are at risk for a hip fracture if you fall
You need an ice gripper on your cane
Stay inside as much as you can in the extreme temperatures

I was afraid - terrified. I wondered if I even had a future to look forward to.

Then I got angry about what was happening to me realizing that I was at a crossroads in my life.

And then I got still....and asked for Divine Guidance.

Resources to help me poured into my inbox. I also remembered the tools I'd use before on my healing journey including the wit, widsom and support from Bernie Siegel, MD.

In the dark night of my mind, body and soul a light shined through the power of my pen. I penned my first poem, "Running the Race." It foreshadowed my 2009 Boston Marathon run.

Poetry poured out of my soul as though a spigot were turned on firing up my imagination with visualizations of being healthy, whole and free. I danced in the rain without my leg brace. I saw myself running (although I had never run a day in my life). I dug deep in all of my therapies to bring my body back from its withered state.

I was terrified to leave my full time award winning career as a VA social worker but after a breast cancer scare, I took a leap of faith giving 6 weeks notice and pulling all of my money out of my retirement account. I was blessed with the support of Tom who told me it was a no brainer to quit my job and heal my life.

After being discharged from Spaulding Rehab's Outpatient Clinic, I hired a personal trainer!

Crazy right?

I was told by the medical establishment if I use it I will lose it (and oh how I hope they have revised their treatment recommendations since 2006) yet something deep within me said I HAD to get moving.

After reaching my initial health and fitness goals with my personal trainer, she asked me what I wanted to set for my next goals.

From the soon to be released "The Adventures of Runnergirl 1953":
“Wait. I have one more goal.”

Janine stopped and turned around.

“I want to run the Boston Marathon for Spaulding Rehab Hospital. I know they have a Race for Rehab team and I want to do it next year.”

Janine was non-plussed. I don’t know what kept her from turning tail and getting as far away from me as she could. She came back into my house and put down her things. She said that the first thing I would need is a pair of running shoes. She told me that Marathon Sports on Beacon Street would be able to help me. She laid out a cursory training plan and said that we would begin indoors to build up my cardio endurance. As soon as the weather got a little warmer, we’d go outdoors and I would learn how to run.

What courage it took for me to go way outside of my comfort zone and learn to run at the age of 54. I ran in races where invariably I finished last. But I finished and my story inspired (and continues to inspire) others.

With the challenge of living in a body that had once been assaulted by the polio virus and unrelenting assaults from family members, it takes courage to continue to challenge myself and maintain a rigorous 5 day a week training program.

Yet I embrace all the gifts that these challenges have given me.

I've discovered how much strength and courage I have inside of me to conquer any and every challenge life has thrown my way.

From the Foreword of Going the Distance: The Power of Endurance written by Jacqueline Hansen:
Just for a moment, let’s ponder the word “heart.” The Latin word for heart is “cor.” Cor is also the root of the word “courage.” I would attribute both heart and courage to Mary. Even Mary herself has said that “It takes incredible courage to heal trauma . . . healing both paralytic polio and trauma.” Author Parker Palmer wrote that “The heart is where we integrate what we know in our mind with what we know in our bones, the place where our knowledge can become more fully human. When all that we understand of self and world comes together in the center place called the heart, we are more likely to find the courage to act humanely on what we know.”

Whatever challenges you may be experiencing, my hope and prayer is that you find the courage to go beyond what you think you cannot do to discover a world of possibility opening before you.

To your health and wellness
From my heart to yours
Mary

***Coming Soon - The Adventures of Runnergirl 1953***
The Adventures of Runnergirl 1953 takes you on Mary McManus’ healing odyssey from a wheelchair to the finish line of the 2009 Boston Marathon and beyond. After the diagnosis of Post-Polio Syndrome in December 2006, Mary got still and asked for Divine Guidance. She harnessed the power of her mind to heal her body, feverishly writing poetry in which she imagined herself healthy, whole and free from the shackles of her youth. Mary’s quest to heal her life led her to the sport of running that tested her mettle while fueling her journey of transformation from a survivor of childhood paralytic polio and severe trauma at the hands of family members to a woman who embodies faith, grace under fire, courage, determination, endurance and resilience. Running became a way of life for Mary. As you’ll discover in “The Adventures of Runnergirl 1953” nothing, not even a serious knee injury in December of 2014 could stop her on the roads or in her life. Mary’s story is one that will leave you cheering for the underdog and discovering the meaning of different ability as Mary overcame every challenge that life presented to her.

Celebrating Ten Years of Running: A Run & Sun & Time on the Beach

Research demonstrates that spending time at the beach has physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. These are health benefits of spending time by the ocean and What the beach does to your brain are just two articles that share the research on the benefits of going to the beach.

We were blessed with beautiful weather for late September in Boston. We planned to go to Carson Beach and run out to U.Mass Boston and back for our 5K together and Tom would complete his miles for training for Bermuda Marathon Weekend. There were many many events happening in Southie on Saturday. Parking lots were closed off and eventually roads were closed to traffic. There was a walk for Pancreatic Cancer. We were determined to have our run by the beach. We parked across from M Street Beach.

A sea of walkers in purple shirts were in front of us. Tom suggested that we were meant to take it easy and not try to zig zag our way through them. Once the pack thinned out we did pick up our pace. We took in all of the sights and sounds of Southie on a very busy end of summer day. Our runs these days are more than just a way to improve pace or get in the miles. They are a total experience of being in the moment and nourishing ourselves mind, body and soul!

Tom went off to finish his miles for Bermuda and I soaked up sunshine on the beach while reading:

David Hamilton,Ph.D. is one of the leading luminaries in the mind/body connection phenomenon. Using his background as a scientist in the pharmaceutical industry he uses research to support why and how using visualization heals the body. I was blessed to be able to share my healing journey with David and to have his editors include my story in his book. I continue to heal from Post-Polio Syndrome and severe childhood trauma. It's great to have new and inspiring resources to keep the flame of my health and wellness journey lit.

I bathed in the sunshine from Source sending light and love to all of my cells. I continue to recover from training for and running 3 Bermuda Half Marathons in as many years. That's no small feat for anyone but add in my age (I'll be 65 on Christmas) and my physical challenges, it becomes a very big accomplishment; one that needs to be honored and respected as I allow my body to put everything back where it belongs without the weekly pounding of adding on miles.

When Tom joined me again on the beach we enjoyed our lunch and savored listening to the waves. We walked along the beach and I stopped to take this video:

After our swimming workout on Sunday, we returned to the beach. The frenetic activity from Saturday was gone. There were only a few people on the beach soaking up the last warm rays of summer sunshine in Boston.

We set our meditation timer for 40 minutes and allowed the warm sunshine, the rhythm of the waves and a gentle breeze to be our soundtrack for our meditation.

This weekend was a gift from the Universe. We had two beautiful weather days to get in a run, soak up the sun and experience all the benefits that being on the beach has to offer to mind, body and soul.

To your health and wellness
From my heart to yours
Mary

Celebrating Ten Years of Running: My Morning Run

Yesterday's run was going to be an easy 5K. Tom and I are running the Joseph Middlemiss Superhero 5K on Saturday. It's a hilly course and my first road race since the Bermuda Half Marathon in January. I've been giving my body time and space to recover from 3 half marathons in as many years being mindful of what a miracle it was to have run 3 half marathons in consecutive years! Polio, trauma, Post-Polio Syndrome and a serious knee injury were not going to stop me!

My first mile was at an easy pace.

I couldn't leave it at easy and I picked up my pace that yielded a negative split of 34 seconds. The third mile was a +14 second split from mile 2 but still a 20 second negative split from mile 1.

It was a warm morning for September 17th here in Boston and quite humid. I loved being able to wear a tank top and shorts and could subtitle our run "Endless summer." I savored everything about our run. As the run went on, I felt my endorphins kick in. Problems became more manageable; stress melted away. I became in tune and in step with the Universe enjoying the sights, sounds and scents of our run. We had a lot of company on our run from Boston College students and staff. The energy is contagious from other like minded people who know the benefits of getting up and out on an early morning run.

By the time we got home dripping with sweat and a little nauseous from the heat and pushing the pace, I felt my heart open overflowing with gratitude for the blessings in our lives. Oh sure we have our challenges - everyone does - but the best way to shrink those challenges to a manageable size is to run. I don't run away from my problems. I run to transform and transcend those problems by shifting the hormones of stress to the hormones of well being and happiness. I smiled as the tea kettle whistled letting me know it was time for oatmeal (and coffee for Tom) and I popped in the quinoa bread toast. The chilled orange juice and banana delighted my taste buds. When endorphins kick in, the brain's sensory circuits get tuned into simple pleasures.

It is a bonus that I am blessed to run with my life partner of 41 years. When we took our vows we used the Bible quote, "A sorrow shared is a sorrow divided. A joy shared is a joy multiplied." We get to experience those vows in action during the gift of a morning run.

From my heart to yours,
To your health and wellness,
Mary

Celebrating Ten Years of Running: I Am in Awe!

As I stood looking out over the ocean and towards U.Mass Boston where we had done an out and back 3.5 mile run, I felt a sense of awe overcome me.

I just ran 3.5 miles! My pace continues to improve with negative splits and an average pace of 17:39. I finished with a 16:02 sprint.

It's a miracle!

Until 2015, I was unable to get steady traction on my healing journey from the effects of childhood paralytic polio and trauma. I ran the 2009 Boston Marathon shortly after coming out of a leg brace using a cane and at times a wheelchair for mobility. I took 10 months off from running and returned with a great comeback feeling healthy and well. In March of 2011 after my nephew died as a result of addiction and depression, I left running for yoga. It was the path I needed to take at the time but after 4/15/13 I knew I needed to pull myself together and get back on my healing path.

Nine races in 9 months with PR after PR but no cross training and the recipe for disaster ended in a serious knee injury. The admonition that if I used it I would lose it (yes you read that right) was once again told to me only this time it took the tone of an "I told you so." The physiatrist from the Post Polio clinic told me that I needed to stop running but since he knew I was not going to stop running, said I needed to cap my distance...and prepare for a total knee replacement in a few years.

I was blessed to find my way to healers and teachers to rekindle the wisdom and healer within once again using visualization, writing poetry and meditation to unleash healing. I instituted a cross training regimen and believed with every fiber of my Being that all was healed. With the power of visualization, Kinesiotaping, chiropractic care, strength training and cross training, I dissolved bone spurs, grew new cartilage and a new gastroc muscle and set goals not limits.

I went on to run the Bermuda Half Marathons in 2016, 2017 and 2018. I wanted to take a break from the half marathon distance after 2017 but how do you possibly refuse an invitational entry from the Bermuda Marathon Weekend Race Director?

I tested my mettle to the max with the 2018 Bermuda Half Marathon.

I am in awe I ran 3 half marathons in as many years. After all, 12 years ago I was told to prepare to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair.

It's a miracle!

I pushed my pace and focused on continuing to unleash the runner within me during yesterday's run.

I'm in awe that I continue to run, uninjured, healthy and whole.

I'm in awe of being able to experience the joy of running through South Boston savoring the sights and sounds along the way, remembering a time not too long ago when even walking a few steps took great effort.

As I got changed in the locker room after our swimming workout today I was awe struck with the reality that when I was 5 years old the polio virus invaded my body. It attacked my spinal cord and my central nervous system. I was paralyzed from the neck down. The virus affected my breathing and movement in my extremities. Yet my body was able to recover from the initial polio virus. While I was able to recover and regain mobility, I have experienced lifelong challenges that, 12 years ago manifested in the guise of Post-Polio Syndrome.

YET through harnessing the power of my mind/body connection, writing poetry to ignite the power of my visualization and working hard with sheer grit and determination, I became a runner and gained strength, health, wellness and vitality!

I celebrate 10 years of running.

I AM IN AWE!

From my heart to yours,
To your health and wellness,
Mary

Celebrating Ten Years of Running: A Return to Wollaston Beach!

Given the stiff headwinds, the locked bathrooms, and the fact I forgot our post run bananas, we were about to abort the mission for yesterday's run on Wollaston Beach. But Spirit whispered through the wind.

Tom and I agreed to just do it!

It was a magical and mystical run.

We had not been to Wollaston Beach for a training run in quite a long time. We trained along Wollaston Beach and into Marina Bay for long runs on the road to the 2009 Boston Marathon.

I took my first very tentative steps along Wollaston Beach shortly after I began working with a personal trainer after being discharged from Spaulding Rehab's Outpatient Clinic following the diagnosis of Post-Polio Syndrome. I was winded after only a short distance. I was wobbly on my legs like a foal.

The Thoroughbred from: "Feel the Heal: An Anthology of Poems to Heal Your Life"

A dark horse
dark past
finishing last
ready to quit
battered and bruised
a foal fouled
yet Spirit unbroken
a thoroughbred deep inside
despite appearances
all she needed was a chance
someone to believe in her
a horse whisperer
in the mist
amidst fog and foliage
she runs
breaking free
transformed
into the champion she was always meant to be.

The sidewalk and sea wall ahead of us were wet. We were curious as to how that happened since it wasn't raining!

It was high tide and the seas were churning from the tropical storms and hurricanes out in the Atlantic. The mighty waves hit the sea wall and splashed over it. The sun peeked out through the clouds and warmed us up as the salty sea spray kept us cool.

Seeing and smelling the briny air while we confronted the headwinds unleashed a sense of unbridled joy in facing the challenge of the elements.

We had been running in hot and humid temperatures or rain. The cooler temperatures were invigorating.

I had a sense of expansiveness and connection to all that is. My problems washed out with the waves out at sea and as the waves crashed up against the sea wall.

I kept an even pace consistently hitting that sub-18 minute/mile. A part of me felt frustrated that I am not back to my 15/16 minute/mile pace that I ran before training for 3 consecutive Bermuda Half Marathons but then I remembered where I was many years ago when I could barely walk along Wollaston Beach never mind run for 3.11 miles!

We experienced a runner's high after experiencing the beautiful views of Boston, running up a very steep hill and experiencing the vastness of Mother Nature.

After 3.11 miles, we were debating about where Tom should finish his 8 miles as he is training for the Bermuda Half Marathon.

I suggested we go to Carson Beach where the bathrooms would still be available and where the wind might be less intense. It's a very short ride from Wollaston to Carson Beach. The sun came out. The winds died down and Tom ran the remainder of his 5 miles to deposit in the Bank of Bermuda while I sat on the beach reading Billy Mills book, "Lessons of a Lakota."

When Tom returned from his 10 minute/mile run, I snapped these photos:

The second photo is Tom chasing a seagull.

I am thrilled that I ran 3 consecutive Bermuda Half Marathons and am focusing on the 5K distance and speed, especially when I take a look back and remember where I once was in my health and wellness journey.

I now have total faith in how far I can go ... with patience, persistence and finding exquisite joy in the journey!

From my heart to yours,
To your health and wellness,
Mary
